From July 22nd to July 23rd, the G20 Development Ministerial Meeting of 2024 was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The meeting discussed issues of increasing access to water and sanitation, combating inequalities and trilateral cooperation. Deputy China International Trade Representative (vice-ministerial rank) Li Yongjie attended the meeting.
Li Yongjie stated that the Third Plenary Session of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China held this month pointed out that Chinese modernization follows the path of peaceful development. China works to build a community of shared future for mankind, uphold the shared values of humanity and implement the Global Development Initiative, Global Security Initiative and Global Civilization Initiative. We are willing to strengthen cooperation with G20 members in three aspects. First, to uphold true multilateralism and to jointly promote inclusive economic globalization and make global development more equitable, efficient and inclusive. Second, to accelerate innovative development and establish an open, inclusive and non-discriminatory environment of digital economy to help small and medium enterprises get better integrated into global industrial chains, innovative chains and value chains. Third, to deepen trilateral cooperation, give full respect to the sovereignty and initiative of recipients of aid, enhance the capacity of independent development of developing countries and make contribution to achieving sustainable development goals.
Li Yongjie noted that China calls developed countries to deliver on their financial promises. The Chinese side encourages UN development agencies to participate in international cooperation in water and sanitation, assisting developing countries and particularly the least developed countries to build water and sanitation infrastructure.
The meeting was presided over by Mauro Vieira, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Brazil and attended by delegates from G20 members, guest countries and international organizations. Documents resulted from the meeting includes G20 Development Ministerial Declaration for Reducing Inequalities and G20 Call to Action on Strengthening Drinking-water, Sanitation, and Hygiene Services.
